Memorial complex to the prisoners of the Ozarichi death camp

The large-scale reconstruction of the Ozarichi death camp memorial began in the spring of 2023. Half of the funds from the republican clean-up day were transferred for the project realization by the governmental decree. As a result of the reconstruction, the territory of the memorial complex was expanded to 1.75 hectares, an information pavilion was erected, iconic locations appeared, each of which reflects the events of March 1944. In the center of the memorial are installed "Stones of Insight". These are four steles with archive photos of prisoners taken during the liberation of the camp. And between them there is a triangular-shaped black marble slab on which the words of the poetess Sophia Shah, a native of these places, are inscribed:

"The swamp is still sick here, its entire depth is suffering, in every tree there is an eternal oppression of memory, it is not in the crowns, but in the roots. Here, like a shadow, a wavering ghost somehow seeks to remind of the sorrows of bullying, here, like a sign, the pain is inhuman and the horror is such that it is better to be silent."

The Tower of Memory is now located near the swamp, on the site of the former cross. Inside this octagonal structure are engraved memories of former prisoners. Through the tower there is an exit to the wall of sorrow with the crosses and to the observation platform at the edge of the swamp, which became a mass grave for thousands of innocent victims of genocide.

The renovated memorial also includes the first in Belarus memorial sign in honor of the military medics who joined the fight and prevented the spread of typhus epidemic among the Red Army soldiers and the local population.

On December 9, 2024, after a large-scale reconstruction in Ozarichi, the renewed memorial complex in memory of the victims of fascism was opened. It was on this day that the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, adopted on December 9, 1948, turned 75 years old. Since that time the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Genocide has been celebrated.

Today the Memorial Complex to the prisoners of the Ozarichi death camp is classified into the 3rd category of values by the Resolution of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus No. 578 of 14.05.2007 "On the Status of Historical and Cultural Treasures".

Every year on March 19, the day of liberation of the concentration camp "Ozarichi", the memorial complex hosts memorial mourning events attended by former prisoners, their relatives and close friends.
